Hi, I’m Tamsyn Cornelius and I am a freelance writer and editor with over 10 years of experience in digital and print media.
I am a creative at heart.
I love beautiful imagery, interior décor and design, long summer days, DIY and filling blank canvases with colour.
I am a wife and a mom of two (three if you count the dog) and I work from my home in Cape Town… but home is really where my family is, so I have been known to lug a laptop along on family vacations and may often find inspiration in the strangest of places – whether on a bus trip through Istanbul, or in one of the many splendid roadside coffee shops along the pristine coastline of the Western Cape.
I tell stories…
I provide creative content for clients from all around the world as a freelance writer. From marketing material and business profiles to magazine feature writing, lifestyle and parenting blogs, social media management and more… I am your go-to gal for stand-out editorial. I dream, breathe, live beautiful copy and I love being able to translate ideas and life experiences into words. In other words, I tell stories… stories that sell, inspire and have real impact.
You know when you just know…
From the moment I first picked up a pen to copy lettering at the age of 5 or 6, I knew I was going to be a writer. I was born for this.
I found my happy place lost in stories and partook in any creative writing assignment that came my way. With a passion for writing, I then completed a B.A Degree in Media & Writing and English Language and Literature (2006, UCT).
I love freelancing…
Over a decade later and many hours on the grind, I now have the privilege of working for myself and daily interacting with some amazingly talented people and companies. Whether interviewing a South African hero as a cover story for a Christian magazine or inspiring beautiful interior design as the social media editor for one of SA’s leading online design and décor portals… this is my happy space. I specialise in content related to faith, parenting, design, décor, wellness and more and I’m all about empowering others to find their God-given purpose and to make an impact in the world. “Istanbul… the constant beating of the wave of the East against the rock of the West…” – Susan Moody
Call us crazy, but when our kids were younger, we had the opportunity to venture abroad to spend 10 glorious summer days in Istanbul, Turkey. As one of the biggest cities in the world, Istanbul is a land immersed in historical and geographical significance and it is the only city on the planet that is located on two continents.
The thought of travelling to a foreign nation with a baby and a toddler was certainly scary, but without having to spend a cent of our own money (yes, you read that correctly), we knew that this was to be a once-in-a-lifetime expedition that we simply could not pass up!
Whether you live in a cosy apartment or in a massive freestanding home, bringing greenery into your home, no matter what size it may be, allows for balance and depth in any interior. Plants and greenery are the staples of living – add these to your interiors and enjoy the many benefits they offer. By Tamsyn Cornelius
Plants are not just pretty on the eyes – they serve a practical purpose in absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen. Houseplants actually work to clean our air and studies suggest that they have many added health benefits including reducing stress and helping to sharpen one’s focus.Read More »
For many people, the idea of a happy life seems elusive and far-fetched; a fleeting moment that passes all too quickly amid the mundane of an ordinary life. But it doesn’t have to be that way. New studies and old philosophies are quickly proving that happiness as a state of mind can be achieved on a daily basis. Here are 10 simple ideas that will help you achieve contentment in your everyday life. By Tamsyn Cornelius
It seems a cliché to think that a positive attitude can have a fundamental impact on your wellbeing. However, academics at the Harvard Graduate School of Education have researched how negative emotions can cause physical harm to the body. Studies suggest that destructive thoughts have a direct impact on increased stress hormones, which in turn has an adverse effect on organs like the heart. However, optimistic thoughts and actions were linked to good heart health and overall wellbeing.
“You may not have my eyes or smile, but from that very first moment, you had my heart.” Say hello to our next #JewelInHisCrown, Verena Read, an entrepreneur mom who lives and works on her family farm in Malmesbury, Western Cape. By Tamsyn Cornelius
As a young Argentinian girl on the cusp of adolescence, the idea of life in South Africa was a foreign concept to Verena, but over three decades ago, she packed up her life in Buenos Aires and trekked across oceans to start a new journey with her family in the Western Cape of South Africa.Read More »
As a work-from-home mom of two very active little people, I am constantly on the lookout for activities and ideas to occupy my two enquiring minds. My 3-year-old son is a confident go-getter and the complete opposite of his 6-year-old sister who is more of an introvert and a gentle, creative soul. Finding something that they both enjoy is quite rare, so when I stumbled upon Busy Bean on Facebook, I knew that we simply had to give them a try.
Instead of plastic toys and figurines that simply end up gathering dust in a toy box somewhere, Busy Bean offers a great range of educational activities for young kids that come in buckets or bags for easy storage.
A few weeks back, my husband surprised me with a little breakaway down the Cape West Coast to a town I had never heard of before. Jacobsbaai is a rural little seaside village situated midway between Saldanha Bay and Vredenburg in the Western Cape of South Africa. It’s only a short drive away from these two popular West Coast towns, and yet, Jacobsbaai feels remote enough so that you feel completely removed from civilisation.
“There’s grace in the journey and joy in the waiting.”
Born in Ibadan Nigeria but raised in South Africa, Toyin Oladiran always had great expectations for her life and worked hard to pursue a career as a qualified lawyer. When she married her best friend, Fiyinfolu, she was almost certain that motherhood would come easily at the right time. But things don’t always work out the way we plan and sometimes we need to experience peace in the season of waiting. This is her journey as a #JewelInHisCrown. By Tamsyn Cornelius
